Cowpea Curculio

Cowpea Curculio

Chalcodermus aenus

This small black weevil is confined to the Southeastern states. It is most often found on Cowpeas, but also affects Peas, Beans, Lima Beans and Strawberries (as well as leguminous weeds).

The adults overwinter on plant debris in the soil and lay their eggs on the developing pods. When the eggs hatch the larvae enter the pods and feed there until ready to pupate, when they move into the soil. Another generation emerges a couple of weeks later and starts over again.

The best control methods include crop rotation, sanitation are encouraging natural predators.
