The essential kitchen ingredients that no cook can do without
The onion is one of the essential kitchen ingredients that no cook can do without. Onions can be used for soup stock, stews, braising, sauteing, onion rings, casseroles and many classic and contemporary dishes. The onion probably originated somewhere in central Asia, but has been cultivated by every major civilization from the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans onward. It is now one of the most important flavorings for people all around the world.Amaryllidaceae Allium cepa
Alternate Growing Options
These are varieties of bulbing onion, sown in fall (they may need protection in colder areas) and harvested as scallions in spring (which is why they are sometimes known as Spring Onions). They are planted very closely together, with as many as 30 plants per square foot.
Green Onions can also be multiplanted, with up to 10 seeds in one soil block or plug tray (in this way you can grow a bunch of green Onions all at once).
There are varieties specifically bred for this purpose (White Lisbon is one), or you can just use any surplus Onion sets.
Onions are commonly interplanted with Carrots, but do well with many crops.
