Plant Guide
Chard : Italian Silver Rib
Favorite of Italian cooks
Exclusive. Selected by discerning Italian cooks for clean mellow flavor, handsome vigorous plants have wide, silvery mid-ribs & crinkly, broad, deep green leaves. Great spinach alternative.
Chenopodiaceae Beta vulgaris subsp. ciclaAlternate Growing Options
Ornamental
The spectacularly colored Chard varieties (red, white, orange, yellow) are highly photogenic and are a favorite of upscale magazine garden photos. They can be used as foliage plants for ornamental garden beds.
Spring Greens
If you protect the roots over the winter in cold climates, they will start growing again as the weather warms up in spring. This new growth can be harvested several times before the plants bolt.
Young Tender Greens Only
If you desire delicious young tender greens you can plant Swiss Chard closer together than the variety requirements but you must constantly thin the outer leaves.
